5 Unusual Health Benefits of Cannabidiol Oil

CBD, THC’s calm cousin, is known for its anti-anxiety and pain-relieving effects, but this cannabinoid may also offer other health benefits.

From inflammation to weight loss and clear skin, CBD oil can have some surprising effects on the body.

Here are five unusual health benefits of cannabidiol oil.

1. Anti-Inflammatory Effects

Inflammation is believed to contribute to at least seven of the 10 leading causes of death, including cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease.

A study published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine found that CBD reduced pain and chronic inflammation in some mice.

Cannabinoids exert their anti-inflammatory effects through inhibition of cell proliferation, induction of apoptosis (death of cells), induction of T-regulatory cells (Tregs) and suppression of cytokine production.

Cytokines are secreted from cells as a response to injury and infection in the body.

2. Overcome Addiction

There is some evidence that CBD can help people quit smoking and overcome other addictions.

In one study, published in Addictive Behaviors, smokers who used CBD-infused inhalers smoked fewer cigarettes and no longer had cravings for nicotine.

CBD has also been shown to reduce withdrawal symptoms in those suffering from substance abuse, including insomnia, pain, anxiety and mood-related symptoms (source CBDAlliance.org). It is believed that CBD modulates the neuronal circuits involved in drug addiction.

3. Weight Management and Diabetes

When it comes to weight management, CBD may help users stay on the right track. CBD affects the body’s metabolism, helping you maintain a healthy weight with greater ease.

In one study, published in Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, CBD was shown to induce fat browning, improve the oxidation and breakdown of fat, decrease fat cell generation, and increase the body’s ability to burn calories.

Some researchers believe that CBD may have the potential to treat type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease due to its anti-inflammatory properties.

In one study, scientists found that cannabidiol prevented diabetes in young mice. Just 30% of the mice treated with CBD developed diabetes, while 86% of non-treated mice developed the disease.

It is believed that CBD may prevent and delay the destruction of insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, according to one mouse study. CBD may also reduce inflammatory cytokines in diabetic mice by changing the immune response.

4. Anti-Psychotic Properties

Unlike THC, CBD actually has anti-psychotic properties and may even reduce symptoms in schizophrenia.

Research suggests that CBD may be a natural alternative to antipsychotic drugs, but with fewer side effects.

In one study involving 42 patients with acute schizophrenia, CBD (800 mg daily) improved all symptoms after four weeks.

5. Anti-Acne Properties

Acne is caused, in part, by inflammation and also be overworked sebaceous glands. CBD’s anti-inflammatory effects may help reduce breakouts, but it can also help keep your skin clear in other ways.

One study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation found that CBD lowers sebum production. The reduced sebum production is due partly to the anti-inflammatory effects of CBD.

CBD benefits the body in many ways, both physically and mentally. But it’s important to ensure that you’re using high-quality CBD from a reputable brand to maximize its benefits.
