In this case we compare samples from two or more people to determine if they are full or half-siblings, or to determine if they are half-siblings or unrelated. We recommend testing the mother(s) sample and any other know siblings as well.* This test is $795 with the mother's sample or $895 without the mother's sample (plus collection fees of $20-$45 per person if needed for legal purposes) and can be completed using cheek or buccal swab collection.

ACCURACY

We perform the most accurate tests available. Fortunately, we have the broadest spectrum of identity tests available today. Our standards for accuracy and certainty are inspected and accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks Parentage Testing Committee.

With sibling analysis, a relatedness index of 100 or greater is very difficult to obtain, even if the individuals are full siblings, due to random genetic inheritance at multiple DNA markers. Several small studies have been published:

In the sibship study (Journal of Forensic Science, 2004;49:1262-664), combined sibship indices for known full siblings ranged from 4.6 to over 1 billion and for random, unrelated individuals from 0.000000045 to 0.12.

In the half-sibling study (Transfusion, 2007;47:515-19), the results suggest that half-sibling indices of 30 or greater are fairly characteristic of individuals who are related as half-siblings. Half-sib indices of 0.1 or less are fairly characteristic of unrelated individuals who claim to be half-sibs. Indices falling between 0.1 and 10 represent a “grey zone”, as this region represents an area of overlap between the two groups. In this case, the laboratory will request additional samples from the mother(s) or other relative so that the case may be resolved. 

CONFIDENTIALITY

Every client's address, phone number and other personal information is held in confidence. We send a report of results to all tested adults, but without express written order will not release any personal information to the other parties. And, of course, our testing and records are in a verifiable, secure facility and unavailable to unauthorized personnel.

*It is possible using the most advanced of testing methods to determine if two people are likely to be half siblings or full siblings wihtout the mother's sample. For example, one person can be found to be X times more likely to be a half sibling than unrelated. If X is a number greater than 10, it is highly indicative of one relationship over another. Obviously, the higher the number is, the more certain the relationship. Although, we are specialists in this type of testing, we have no way to guarantee this test will be highly conclusive as the outcome is dependent on the tested party's genetic make-up.
